Microcode inside the Intel 8087 floating-point chip: register exchange

This article examines the microcode of the Intel 8087 floating-point coprocessor's FXCH (register exchange) instruction. The Opcode Collective reverse-engineered the chip's 14 micro-instructions implementing FXCH, which handles register swapping, empty checking, exception handling, and NaN substitution.
