Orion 1.1 for macOS is out, with containers
Orion 1.1 for macOS has been released, introducing container support that allows users to isolate browsing sessions, cookies, and data into separate environments.
Background
- Orion is a lightweight web browser for macOS (and iOS) built by Kagi, the same company behind the paid search engine of that name. It uses WebKit (the same engine as Safari) but adds features Safari lacks, such as support for Chrome and Firefox extensions, built-in ad-blocking, and vertical tabs.
- "Containers" (the headline feature of version 1.1) let you isolate different browsing sessions — e.g., work logins in one container, personal logins in another — so cookies, cache, and site data are kept separate. This is similar to Mozilla Firefox's "Multi-Account Containers" feature. It helps users keep multiple accounts on the same site or prevent cross-site tracking without logging out.
- Kagi positions Orion as a privacy-focused alternative to Chrome, Edge, and Safari aimed at power users who want extension compatibility without Google's or Microsoft's data collection.
