OpenJTD: Project to Reverse-Engineer Ichitaro Word Processor Files Used in Japan
OpenJTD is an open-source project aimed at reverse-engineering the file format of Ichitaro, a Japanese word processor. The project seeks to enable reading and converting .jtd and .jtdc files with open tools.
Background
Ichitarō (一太郎) is a Japanese word processor first released in 1985 by JustSystems, once dominant in Japan's business and government sectors. Its proprietary .JTD and .JTT file formats are notoriously hard to open with modern software, creating a major data-access problem for archives, law firms, and companies that still hold decades-old documents. OpenJTD is a new open-source effort to reverse-engineer these formats so the files can be read without needing the original (now-discontinued) software. The project is especially notable because JustSystems never published the format specs, and previous conversion tools were incomplete or Windows-only.
