Qualcomm to Acquire Modular
Qualcomm announced it will acquire Modular, a company specializing in modular hardware design. The acquisition is expected to bolster Qualcomm's efforts in scalable computing platforms. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Background
- Qualcomm is a giant US chipmaker best known for designing the Snapdragon processors inside most Android phones, as well as cellular modems and wireless technology (5G, Wi-Fi).
- The acquisition target is almost certainly **Modular Inc.**, a startup founded in 2016 by former Google engineer Sonny Vu. Modular is building a platform to make AI inference (running already-trained models, like Meta's Llama) efficient on commodity hardware, and recently debuted a chip called "MonarQ" with a novel "dataflow" architecture.
- This deal signals Qualcomm's strategy to grow beyond smartphones into AI inference at the edge — running AI on laptops, cars, and IoT devices rather than in cloud data centers. Modular's engineering talent and its compiler-level approach to hardware-software co-design would directly compete with Nvidia's CUDA lock-in.
