Dark sky lighting refers to outdoor lighting designed to minimize light pollution — the excessive or misdirected artificial light that brightens the night sky. Key problems it addresses: glare (harsh light that impairs vision), light trespass (spilling onto neighboring properties), and skyglow (the bright dome visible over cities, which washes out stars). The International Dark-Sky Association (now DarkSky International) is the leading nonprofit advocating for responsible outdoor lighting. Key principles: use fully shielded fixtures that direct light downward, choose warm-color (amber/2700K–3000K) LEDs instead of blue-rich white LEDs (which scatter more in the atmosphere and harm nocturnal wildlife), and install only what's needed. Poor outdoor lighting disrupts ecosystems (migration, reproduction, predation), human circadian rhythms (linked to sleep disorders and cancer risks), and wastes energy. The issue has gained urgency with the global switch to LEDs, which are often bluer and brighter than older lighting, accelerating light pollution despite being energy-efficient.
