AWS joins MySQL steering committee with Oracle, GCP
AWS has joined the MySQL Steering Committee alongside Oracle and Google Cloud, marking a move toward more open governance for the MySQL community. The committee will oversee the development and direction of the MySQL project, aiming to foster broader collaboration among key stakeholders.
Background
- MySQL is the world's most popular open-source database, owned by Oracle since acquiring Sun Microsystems in 2010. The community has long worried about Oracle having unilateral control over its direction.
- AWS and Google Cloud (GCP) are Oracle's biggest competitors in cloud database services — they offer their own managed MySQL-compatible products (Amazon RDS for MySQL, Google Cloud SQL) and have had limited say in MySQL's development.
- The newly formed MySQL Steering Committee gives AWS, GCP, and Oracle joint oversight of the MySQL codebase, technical direction, and release process. This is a meaningful governance change for a project historically dominated by a single vendor.
