Linux Foundation and Others Launch Akrites Defend Open-Source from AI Exploits

The Linux Foundation has announced Akrites, a new initiative aimed at protecting open-source projects from AI-related exploitation. This includes defending against AI systems that use open-source code without complying with licenses (e.g., not sharing modifications), as well as attacks enabled by AI, such as automated generation of malicious code or vulnerability discovery at scale. The Linux Foundation is the nonprofit that hosts many critical open-source projects (Linux, Kubernetes, Node.js). Akrites is relevant because AI companies have increasingly scraped and used open-source code in ways that violate licenses, while also using AI to probe for security flaws more efficiently—both trends threaten the sustainability and security of the open-source ecosystem that much of the internet relies on.
