More evidence of life on Mars but still no life
NASA's Curiosity rover has found new evidence suggesting Mars once had conditions suitable for life, including organic compounds and signs of long-lasting water environments. However, direct proof of past or present life on the red planet remains elusive.

- NASA's Perseverance rover has been exploring Mars's Jezero Crater since 2021, collecting rock samples that may contain signs of ancient microbial life. The new findings center on "leopard-spot" markings in a rock nicknamed "Cheyava Falls" — these spots resemble features on Earth that are formed by microbes living in sediment.
- The key question is whether these markings are biological (a "biosignature") or just a chemical fluke. Scientists are cautious because Mars has non-biological ways to create similar patterns; the last big "life on Mars" claim (the 1996 ALH84001 meteorite) was later disputed.
- Why it matters: This is the strongest evidence yet that Mars once had conditions capable of supporting life. The samples are sitting on Mars, sealed in tubes, awaiting a future mission (NASA's Mars Sample Return, currently delayed and over budget) to bring them to Earth for definitive analysis.
