Alan Mathison Turing – IT History Society
Alan Mathison Turing (1912–1954) was a pioneering British mathematician, logician, and computer scientist. He formalized the concepts of algorithm and computation with the Turing machine, played a key role in breaking Nazi codes during WWII, and laid foundational work for artificial intelligence. - Alan Turing (1912–1954) was a British mathematician, logician, and computer scientist, regarded as a father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence.
- During WWII, he led Hut 8 at Bletchley Park, designing electromechanical machines (bombes) to break Enigma-enciphered German messages, a feat that helped shorten the war.
- In 1936 he published "On Computable Numbers," introducing the Turing machine — an abstract model of computation that defined the fundamental limits of what can be computed.
- He devised the Turing test (Imitation Game, 1950) as a criterion for machine intelligence, and worked on early stored-program computers (ACE, Manchester Mark I).
- After the war, he was prosecuted for homosexuality (then a crime in Britain), forced into chemical castration, and died of cyanide poisoning (ruled suicide). A formal royal pardon was granted in 2013 ("Turing's law").
