AWS puts $1B into new AI unit to embed engineers with customers
Amazon Web Services is investing $1 billion to create a new AI unit that will embed engineers directly with customers to help them adopt and integrate artificial intelligence technologies.
Background
- AWS is the world's largest cloud-computing provider. Its new $1 billion unit will embed "forward deployed engineers" (a term from the military) directly inside client companies to build custom AI solutions on AWS's infrastructure.
- This is a competitive response to Microsoft/OpenAI and Google Cloud, which already place engineers with big customers to integrate their AI models. All three cloud giants are racing to lock enterprises into their proprietary AI tooling early.
- For AWS, the bet is that hands-on engineering support increases customer switching costs and drives use of its own AI chips (Trainium, Inferentia) and Bedrock AI service — a strategy that mirrors Amazon's existing consulting arm but focused purely on generative AI.
