Alleged member of international cyber hacking group Scattered Spider arrested
A suspected member of the international cyber hacking group Scattered Spider has been arrested, according to reports. The group is known for targeting major organisations using sophisticated social engineering and phishing attacks.
Background
- Scattered Spider is a loose, English-speaking cybercriminal group known for social-engineering attacks on major tech firms (Twilio, DoorDash, Mailchimp). They use phishing, SIM-swapping (hijacking phone numbers), and impersonating IT support — not malware.
- The group gained notoriety after a 2023 hack of MGM Resorts that disrupted Las Vegas casinos for days and cost the company ~$100 million.
- Members often act as "initial access brokers": they break into corporate networks, then sell that access to ransomware gangs like ALPHV/BlackCat.
- One alleged member was arrested in Scotland as part of an FBI and UK law enforcement effort crackdown. The suspect was reportedly a minor during some of the alleged offences.
