Amazon Leo mission updates: 375 satellites now in orbit after Atlas V launch
Amazon's Project Kuiper launched 27 satellites aboard an Atlas V rocket on April 8, bringing its total to 375 satellites in orbit. The launch supports the company's goal of deploying over 3,200 low-Earth orbit satellites to provide broadband internet service, with commercial service expected to begin by the end of 2025.
Background
- Amazon's Project Kuiper is a satellite-internet constellation, competing with SpaceX's Starlink and OneWeb. Announced in 2019, it aims to put thousands of small broadband satellites in low Earth orbit ("Leo" = ~300–2,000 km up) to serve underserved areas.
- 375 satellites is a small fraction of Kuiper's planned 3,200+, and far behind Starlink's ~6,000+. Amazon faces an FCC deadline to deploy half its constellation by mid-2026.
